The answer is a terse "error writing to /dev/null" message displayed on the controlling terminal. I solved one of the problems with cpus=1 -v, but now the system stop at ApplePS2Controller: setCommandByte for mouse interrupt install. Then either no program in gnome starts anymore or when I can make it reboot it hangs on errors from the bcm43xx Broadcom wifi driver. adding noapic to grub will clear the messages.
